Senate confirms Uwani Abba Aji as new Supreme court justice

The Nigerian Senate, Thursday, confirmed the appointment of Uwani Abba Aji as the justice of the Supreme Court of Nigeria.

“Hon. Justice Uwani Musa Abba Aji, JCA is confirmed as Justice of the Supreme Court of Nigeria,” the Senate president Bukola Saraki said during the plenary on Thursday.

“On behalf of my colleagues, I congratulate the new Justice of the Supreme Court. I hope she will carry out this very important responsibility,” he added.

The confirmation came after the senate considered the report of the committee on Judiciary, Human Rights and legal matters on her nomination

The chairman of the committee, David Umaru, said the nominee has been screened and satisfied all requirement.

Following Umaru’s presentation, the lawmakers approved his nomination.

However, Saraki, praised the members of the committee for their swift consideration judging by the fact that the request came from the executive on December 6 and urged other arms of government to replicate such effectiveness.

“Let me also commend our members; we received this communication from the president on December 6th and today, December 20th, we have treated this matter and showed our view on how important it is to ensure that the Judiciary is functional and efficient,” Saraki said.

“I hope that the Judiciary and Executive will take a cue from this and improve on the time frame to ensure that we do not delay in replacing our Justices who are newly retired,” he added.
