– Donates N100m for a scholarship of deceased soldiers’ children
Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike has expressed concern over the intractable nature of the fight against terrorism in the North East, charging Nigerians to unite and motivate the Armed Forces to defeat the rebels.

He stressed that it was necessary for the country to do anything and everything possible to stop the insurgency, which he said, had claimed so thousands of military and civilian victims.
Governor Wike stated this yesterday during the Wreath Laying Ceremony in Commemoration of 2020 Armed Forces Remembrance Day at the Isaac Boro Park, Port Harcourt.

“The war on terrorism in the North East has raged for too long, claiming too many military and civilian victims. We must come together as a nation to do whatever is necessary to support and motivate our soldiers to win the war as quickly as possible.

“We must do this and save the nation and our brothers, sisters and the children from the North East from the continuing violence, abductions, and devastation by Boko haram and their affiliates,” he said.

He added that the nation remembers members of the Armed Forces for their contributions to the unity of the country and directed Secretary to the State Government (SSG) to work out modalities to support the Nigerian Legion and soldiers of the state origin who died in service to their fatherland.

Wike announced that the state government has committed N100 million to a scholarship for children of the fallen heroes, assuring government would provide scholarships for their children up to the university level.

He also announced the construction of a Secretariat for the Nigerian Legion, adding, “We are here for the customary remembrance rituals, but for us, this cannot be enough. The greatest honour we can give in return for their service and sacrifice is for us to continue to work together for national peace, unity, and cohesion.

“That is what the military signifies, which essence and ideals are what we must rededicate ourselves to advance the progress of our country.”

Chairman of the state command of the Nigerian Legion, ACG Justice Chichi thanked the governor for his kindness towards the welfare and support of ex-servicemen and families of deceased soldiers.

He appealed to the state government to assist the Legion with financial support for the sustenance of scholarships for the children of the fallen heroes and also build a secretariat for the Legion.
