The Federal Government has constituted a technical committee to support Edo State’s plan to establish an indigenous airline, as part of efforts to strengthen regional air connectivity and boost economic development.
Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, unveiled the plan during a meeting with the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Mr Festus Keyamo, in Abuja yesterday.
The governor, who was accompanied by key members of his cabinet, stressed the urgency of setting up a homegrown airline operating from Benin Airport, saying the initiative would drive economic revival, attract investment, and create jobs in the state.
He disclosed that the state government was exploring external partnerships, including engagements with South African investors who have pledged to provide aircraft for the commencement of operations.
“If I have my way, I want this airline to kick off immediately — even before the election. Edo State needs a strong aviation presence to open up our economy and reposition Benin as a major hub,” Okpebholo said.
Responding, the minister welcomed the initiative, describing it as timely and visionary. He revealed that the ministry was also engaging potential investors who had expressed growing interest in the commercial viability of Benin Airport.
Keyamo recalled the historical relevance of Benin Airport in Nigeria’s aviation ecosystem, noting that it once served as a major hub for the old Midwest region during the heyday of the defunct Okada Air.
“Benin Airport used to be a strong aviation hub during the glory days of Okada Air. There is no reason it cannot reclaim that status. The interest we are seeing today confirms that Benin is ready again,” he said.
To fast-track the process, the minister announced the constitution of a technical committee and requested the governor to nominate a focal person to work directly with the Director of Air Transport Management at the ministry to ensure effective coordination, regulatory compliance, and operational planning.
According to him, the committee will submit weekly reports to both parties, adding that, with proper collaboration, Benin Airport could become fully operational between the first and second quarters of the year.
The meeting underscored the Federal Government’s commitment to strengthening regional air connectivity, promoting indigenous airline operations, and supporting state-led aviation development initiatives in line with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
