Former Cross River State Governor and Peoples Redemption Party (PRP) presidential candidate, Donald Duke, has said he would target a petrol price of about ₦300 per litre if elected president in 2027.
Duke made the statement on Wednesday while appearing on the morning brief show on Channels Television
Asked what he considered a realistic petrol price under his administration, Duke said, “Try and bring it to about ₦300.”
He said affordable fuel was necessary to improve productivity and ease pressure on the economy.
“I’ve said repeatedly that the function of government is to ensure the productivity of its citizens within a safe and orderly environment. Fuel drives your economy. It should be available. It should be affordable,” he said.
In the 2027 election, Duke said the contest should go beyond removing the All Progressives Congress (APC) from power, arguing that opposition parties needed to agree on a common direction for the country.
“The objective shouldn’t be to move the APC and replace it with another person. First of all, the real objective is: where are we taking Nigeria to? We must have a common vision,” he said.
Duke also expressed doubts about the credibility of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) ahead of the 2027 election.
He said the electoral body was responsible for convincing Nigerians that the election would be free and fair.
“The onus is on them, INEC, actually, to convince Nigerians that there will be free and fair elections. Nigerians have become very cynical and sceptical of INEC, and I’m one of them,” Duke said.
Duke is among the presidential candidates seeking to challenge President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and other contenders in the 2027 election. Channels Television has previously reported Duke’s call for opposition parties to unite behind a common candidate.
