Ajimobi’s burial not today

The remains of the former governor of Oyo State, Senator Abiola Ajimobi would not be buried on Friday has been speculated.

The former governor died on Thursday at a private hospital in Lagos over complications from Covid-19. He was aged 70 years.

Many had expected that Ajimobi being a Muslim would be buried in Ibadan less than 24hrs after his death. But a source said the family and relevant agencies are still meeting on when the burial will take place.

The source, however disclosed that the burial may take place tomorrow (Saturday) if all arrangements for the burial concluded today.

Ajimobi was the governor of Oyo State between 2011 and 2019 – he goes into history as the only person who has served two terms as Oyo State governor. Before winning the governorship election, Ajimobi was a senator from 2003 to 2007.

Ajimobi’s death came a week after he was rumoured to have died at a private hospital in Lagos. That rumour turned to be false as both his daughter Fatima Ganduje-Ajimobi and media aide Bolaji Tunji denied it.

He was first hospitalised in early June after contracting the deadly virus.

The former governor emerged deputy national chairman of the ruling All Progrssives Congress in the south-west in March but he was not involved in strategic meetings held ahead of the Edo and Ondo elections.

He was survived by his wife and children.
