The Lagos State Government (LASG) has urged traders, students, and residents to properly sort waste at the source, as part of efforts to reduce flooding and environmental pollution linked to plastic waste.

The call was made during a one-day awareness seminar on circular economy and resource efficiency held at Ikosi-Isheri LCDA, organised by the Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency (LASEPA) in collaboration with the United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO).

Olabisi Shonibare, LASEPA’s Director of Partnership, Grants Management and Innovation, said improper plastic sorting remains a major challenge in tackling environmental degradation. She explained that plastics mixed with general waste often clog drainage channels, exacerbate flooding, and eventually end up in lagoons and water bodies, threatening aquatic life.

Shonibare emphasized that effective waste segregation at source is critical for reducing plastic leakage into the environment, adding that advocacy must be paired with strict enforcement. She warned that facilities violating environmental regulations risk being sealed, while offenders may face fines and other sanctions.

Dr. Hassan Sanuth, Director of Sanitation Services at the Ministry of Environment and Water Resources, noted that poor plastic management contributes to blocked drains, property damage, and health risks.

Meanwhile, Charles Uzoma, UNIDO Project Field Coordinator, highlighted that plastic consumption in Nigeria has surged without a corresponding expansion in collection and recycling systems. He said the initiative aims to promote circular economy practices that keep plastics in productive use, reduce pollution, and create economic opportunities for residents.
