The leaders of Guinea, Liberia, and Sierra Leone met in Conakry to defuse escalating border tensions. The friction flared after reports that Guinean soldiers crossed into Liberia’s northern Lofa County, hoisted the Guinean flag, and allegedly blocked a Liberian company from mining along the shared river border.
The incident mirrors the decades-long dispute between Guinea and Sierra Leone over Yenga, when Guinean troops stayed in the town in the 1990s after helping Sierra Leonean forces against rebels.
Hosted under the auspices of the Mano River Union (MRU) – which includes Côte d’Ivoire – the Conakry summit concluded with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), though specific details have not yet been made public.
