The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Federal Capital Territory Command, says it has retrained 65 per cent of its personnel on weapon handling between 2023 and 2025.

The FCT Commandant, Olusola Odumosu, disclosed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria on Friday in Abuja.

Odumosu said the command plans to retrain an additional 20 per cent of its officers and men, bringing the total to 85 per cent before the end of 2026.

He said personnel retrained on arms usage were drawn from the command’s 25 divisions and area commands, with the exercise conducted by the Arms Squad unit in collaboration with the Nigerian Army.

The commandant added that, beyond weapons training, no fewer than 2,500 officers and men had undergone refresher courses in various areas.

“We have trained personnel from different departments and units at the command headquarters, divisions and area commands on operational skills, intelligence gathering, surveillance, administration, strategy, logistics and tactical manoeuvring,” he said.

Odumosu said the command had also built a new training facility, yet to be inaugurated, equipped with classrooms and tactical obstacle courses.

“This will further enhance physical fitness, readiness and operational capability, as well as the ability to respond effectively to criminal activities,” he said.

He emphasised the need for the corps to align with international best practices by adopting modern innovations in crime prevention.

“We recently received drones from the corps’ national headquarters to enhance patrol of critical national assets within the FCT. This requires proper training for operators, making training a continuous process,” Odumosu said.

He added that the command remained open to support and partnerships from stakeholders willing to assist its operations in combating crime in the FCT.
