The Nigeria Police Force Tuesday arraigned the People’s Democratic Party Osun State governorship candidate, Ademola Adeleke, at the magistrate Court in Mpape, Abuja.
Adeleke was detained on Monday after honouring an invitation at the Force Headquarters in Abuja.
The Federal High Court in Abuja had granted Adeleke permission to travel to the United States of America for a medical check-up. The trip had been scheduled for Tuesday, May 7.
Adeleke was, however, ordered to honour a fresh Police invitation on Monday before travelling the next day.
According to the police spokesman Frank Mba, Adeleke would be arraigned in connection with a “criminal investigations.”
He said Adeleke have been served with charge sheet containing his alleged offences.
“Senator Adeleke is currently in police custody. He was taken into custody in the evening of 6th, May, 2019, in connection with ongoing criminal investigations touching on his person,” Mba said in a press statement on Monday.
The People’s Democratic Party on Monday protested his arrest and detention of its candidate in the 2018 Osun governorship election.
PDP said the force action was in total disregard for the extant order of the Federal High Court.
“This is highly provocative, an invitation to anarchy and recipe for a very serious crisis, not only in Osun, but also in the judiciary and our polity as a nation,” the PDP national publicity secretary, Kola Ologbindiyan, said at a Press conference in Abuja.
“The arrest and detention of Senator Adeleke is a direct act of violence against our laws, the institution of the judiciary and the 1999 Constitution (as amended),” he added.
