Police officers on Tuesday morning fired tear gas to disperse residents, journalists and political figures gathered at the Lekki tollgate in Lagos for a memorial commemorating victims of the October 2020 #EndSARS protests.
Among those affected were the African Democratic Congress (ADC), governorship candidate in Lagos State, Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour, and the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NSDC), governorship candidate, Funso Doherty.
The memorial was organised by the Enough is Enough movement to honour those who lost their lives during the #EndSARS protests.
However, the event was disrupted before participants could lay wreaths at the tollgate, as police officers deployed to the venue fired tear gas canisters to disperse the crowd.
A video shared by TheCable showed participants scrambling for safety as the tear gas spread across the area.
The incident prevented the wreath-laying ceremony from proceeding as planned.
