Vice President Kashim Shettima has reminded Nigerians of the importance of sustainable development, and preservation of oceans and marine resources.He noted that the blue economy represents a vast and untapped potential for economic growth, innovation and environmental conservation, which encompasses a wide range of activities, from fisheries and agriculture to marine tourism and renewable energy.

Shettima spoke yesterday at the inauguration of Senior Executive Course (SEC) 47 of the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS) Kuru, Jos, Plateau State, where 98 new nominees were inaugurated for the 10-month vigorous class.

Represented by the Plateau State Deputy Governor, Ngo Josephine Piyo, the Vice President stressed that by harnessing the resources of the oceans responsibly and sustainably, “we will create new opportunities for prosperity while safeguarding the health of our marine ecosystem.”

He continued: “As scholars and policymakers, it is our collective responsibility to delve deep into the complexities of the blue economy to understand its challenges and opportunities and to develop strategies that promote inclusive and sustainable growth.

“Through research, dialogue and collaboration, we can unlock the full potential of our oceans, and ensure a prosperous future for generations to come.” Shettima pointed out that the induction marks the beginning of a rigorous academic inquiry, thoughtful analysis and informed policy recommendations.

He added: “It is a testament to our nation’s commitment to excellence and dedication to shaping a better Nigeria through knowledge and expertise. I urge every one of you to approach this study with curiosity, passion and a sense of purpose.

“Let us engage in meaningful discussions and strive for innovative solutions that will drive positive change in our country.” The Vice President conveyed his congratulations to the SEC 47 members, as they embarked on the intellectual journey.

In his welcome remarks, the Director-General of the institute, Prof. Ayo Omotayo, recalled that the body was established in 1979 to cater to the betterment of senior military personnel, civil servants and non-governmental organisations (NGOs). He promised that the institute would continually provide policies that would shape the growth and development of the nation.

The Chief Judge of Plateau State, Justice David Mann, administered the oath to the 98 nominees after which they all became participants. It was two weeks ago that the SEC 46 class graduated and automatically became “mni” of the institute.
